keeping up with the times, from 7am to 11pm

I found out today that once you've been a teacher here for 10 years, they send you back out into the real world for 3 days during the summer break on a 'Social Experience' program. They make sure their teachers keep up with the times by letting them choose to work at one of the following: a prefecture-run institution such as a library, museum, retirement home, welfare office, etc.; a volunteer organisation; or any kind of business.

One of the English teachers at my school told me that she will be working at a SEVEN-ELEVEN convenience store!! We both couldn't stop laughing!
